Endless Dungeons

A small conventional graph paper dungeon featuring blocks, hexagons, and connecting passages.

Dungeons are the cornerstone of the fantasy RPGs. Even as games become more story-driven, even when we give up slaying the dragon in exchange for founding a kingdom, the lure of the dungeons is still there. This page is dedicated to dungeons in all their impossible glory.

What about Bob?

A black-and-tan male German Shepherd Dog takes a nap.

Bob, our newest Seeing Eye puppy, arrived today. He’s an eight-week-old, black-and-tan German Shepherd Dog. He’s a pudgy little thing whose floppy ears haven’t figured out how to stand up yet (unlike Olaf, our previous German Shepherd for the Seeing Eye, who came with his ears pointing skyward). He’s damn cute. Not quite as cute as Hank, … Read more

Dicember 2017, Day 4: Strangest Die

Tales of a GM is running the 12 Days of Dicember, a project dedicated dice in all their randomized glory. The question for the fourth day of Dicember is “Which is the strangest die in your collection?” I don’t have any truly strange dice in my collection (e.g. a 27-sided die or one of those endlessly rolling d100s). … Read more

Dicember 2017, Day 3: Favorite Game

A number of different polyhedral dice.

Tales of a GM is running the 12 Days of Dicember, a project dedicated dice in all their randomized glory. The question for the third day of Dicember is “What is your favourite dice game?” My hands-down favorite is Zombie Dice (website/Amazon) by Steve Jackson Games. It’s a push-your-luck game in which the players are zombies trying to catch humans … Read more

Dicember 2017, Day 2: Oldest Dice

Dozens of polyhedral dice.

Tales of a GM is running the 12 Days of Dicember, a project dedicated dice in all their randomized glory. The question for the second day of Dicember is “Which is your oldest die?” The answer is … I honestly don’t know. I have a number of ancient dice that date back to my original Dungeons & Dragons Basic … Read more

Top of the Pile: An Uncanny Holiday

The Avengers team stands ready for their next assignment.

My pile of unread comic books is huge. So huge that I spent the last two Thanksgiving breaks whittling it down to a reasonable size. Those efforts are working; after spending a good chunk of the long Thanksgiving weekend reading I’m within striking distance of the Inhumans vs. X-Men crossover event from Summer 2016. That … Read more

Dicember 2017, Day 1: The Ragnorak Dice

A variety of different kinds of polyhedral dice.

Tales of a GM is running the 12 Days of Dicember, a project dedicated to dice in all their randomized glory. The question for the first day of Dicember is “Which is your favorite set of dice?” For me, it’s my Ragnarok dice. I bought these Chessex dice at MEPACON 2010 for my The Day after Ragnarok lunchtime campaign. The smokey … Read more

The Three-Page Manifesto, Revisited

A hand-drawn dungeon map and gray dice with red pipes cover typed game notes.

The latest RPG Blog Carnival encourages us to “revisit the past”. Hosted by GameMastery, the kickoff post discusses writing a follow-up or sequel to a prior post. For me, that’s revisiting “The Three-Page Manifesto”. Written in 2008, the column saw me grappling with balancing gaming and fatherhood. At the time my kids were 6 and 3 and my … Read more

Game Day: A Little Bit of Everything

The massive central eye of a beholder examines a goldfish in a bowl.

Xanathar’s Guide to Everything arrived in my mailbox last week, bringing with it a cornucopia of goodness for Dungeons & Dragons. My only complaint about the book so far is I can’t read the entire thing simultaneously. As expected the Xanathar’s Guide (Amazon) includes a ton of content that originated in Wizards of the Coast’s Unearthed Arcana columns. It’s been edited and … Read more
