Behold the firepower of this fully armed and operational Geek Tree!
Continuing Nuketown’s new tradition of themed Geek Trees (because I have way too many geeky ornaments), this year, I went with a Star Wars theme. It features 48 ornaments ranging from Luke Skywalker (1997) to Obi-Wan Kenobi (2021). The geek tree itself is a 9-foot tall narrow artificial tree that stands in our library (aka family room). It stands apart from the family tree, which is typically a natural tree located in our living room (there are far, far too many geek ornaments for the family tree).
As in previous years, I use a mix of color and white lights, augmented by strobing LED star lights from IKEA. The white lights provide much-needed power to the older-style Hallmark ornaments which use it for light and/or sound. It also features two networks of Storyteller ornaments, both of which recount lines from the original Star Wars: A New Hope movie. The older series (starting in 2017 and continuing to 2021) is built around starships like the Star Destroyer and Millenium Falcom. It tells the story of the attack on the first Star Star. The newer Storyteller ornaments (starting in 2021) are character-based and appear to recount earlier parts of the movie (like Luke meeting R2-D2 and C-3PO or his initial encounter with Obi-wan). I added five new ornaments to the tree thanks to Christmas and birthday presents, as well as the after-Christmas sale at Hallmark:
- Princess Leia – Storyteller
- Han Solo and Chewbacca – Storyteller
- Darth Vader – Storyteller
- Star Wars: The Mandalorian – Razor Crest
- Star Wars: The Mandalorian – Grogu Greetings Ornament With Sound and Motion
I like the ornaments well enough, but I’m hoping they continue the line with Empire Strikes Back-themed ornaments, as that’s my favorite Star Wars movie (and, I suspect, others as well).
The tree topper this year is Santa Yoda, which graced the early Geek Trees, but was rotated out in favor of a Dr. Who “Weeping Angel” before I started going with themed trees.
Other potential additions to this year’s tree are homemade glitter-galaxy ornaments. I bought the supplies to make them for last year’s Star Trek-themed tree but never got around to doing it.
