Mozilla: The King of All Browsers?

Mozilla is the open-source monster spun off by Netscape in a desperate attempt to harness the passion of thousands of Microsoft-hating geeks to build a better browser. It took years longer than anyone anticipated, but they finally got the code to the point where it could be released, thus spawning the lackluster Netscape 6.0 browser. … Read more

Something Wonderful

“Something is going to happen.”– Dave Bowman. “What what’s going to happen?” — Dr. Heywood Floyd. “Something wonderful.” — Dave Bowman, 2010: Odyssey Two We did something wonderful yesterday. We listened to our baby’s heartbeat for the first time. It was our second official visit to see the midwife, and it was part of the … Read more

A Comfortable Computer Store?

I finally got to visit one of Apple’s new stores, specifically the Apple Store in the Short Hills Mall in New Jersey. It was like walking into a little slice of heaven. Dual-processor G4s with beautiful (and ungodly expensive) 22-inch flat screen monitors lined one mall. The new lamp-like iMacs lined another wall and proved … Read more

I Must Not Fear

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it is gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there … Read more

I’m Going To Be a Dad

I’m going to be a dad.

Wow.

Other declaratives of a more expletive nature come to mind, but I try and keep Nuketown somewhat PG-13.

Is Harry Potter Satanic?

For the last few years — ever since the Harry Potter books became immensely popular — there has been an e-mail circulating online claiming that the adolescent wizard is in liege with Satan, aka the Prince of Darkness. In the books, there is a division between those who wield magic and those who don’t. The … Read more

Save the Children! Ban Video Games!

Nothing makes me more nauseous than cries for government intervention in order to “Save the Children”. The latest effort to promote an ever-more paternalistic government comes from California Democrat Joe Baca, who’s introduced legislation making it a crime to sell graphically violent or sexually explicit video games to kids without parental consent (as reported in … Read more

Nuketown Closing Fiction Section in July

Nuketown is closed to fiction submissions. After June 2002, the fiction section will be closing down (although it will live on in the archives) and it is not likely to re-open any time in the near future. This does not mean that Nuketown itself is shutting down. The rest of the webzine will continue on, … Read more

Of Deep Linking and Stupid Corporations

Wired.com did a story recently about deep linking, which is the practice of one site linking to a story, article or resource inside of another site (as I just did with the link to Wired). Such links bypass the site’s home page (and any advertising there) but are generally regarded by most web folks as … Read more
