4th Edition is Coming?

by Ken Newquist / August 15, 2007

Looks like Dungeons & Dragons 4th edition is coming; there's an GenCon event at 6:30 p.m., Aug. 167 in the Sagamore Ballroom. In the meantime, the Dungeons & Dragons home page is a countdown clock labeled "4Dventure". I was at the 3.0 announcement in 1999, and that makes me want to go to this event ... but not enough to blow off my Godlike event.

None of us are particularly surprised by this; rumors have been swirling about 4th edition for years, and it makes a certain amount of synergistic sense to announce the new edition of Dungeons & Dragons during GenCon's 40th year. It happens to coincide with our group's decision to take a hiatus from D&D for a while; it could be that when we return, there might be a new edition of the game waiting for us. Will we convert? I think that depends on how backwards compatible it is, and whether or or not there is an SRD available for it. Support resources, including the SRD and a good character creator, will play a critical role on deciding to upgrade to 4th edition; if there isn't a 4th edition equivalent of HeroForge I can't see us upgrading us anytime soon.

I will probably try to go to the announcement, but I just can't believe that they would release another stand alone system. A revision, even a miniatures focused rule set that is compatible with 3e, but a whole new system... that's just crazy. Unless there are Earth shattering improvements I just don't see how they can even consider it.
I doubt I will invest in a 4e. I've spent a fortune on what I have now. I'm fairly happy with 3e/3.5 and there are too many other great systems out there.

I leave in for Indy in 6 hours. I have a 1:45hr commute so I am sleeping in my own bed tonight and saving the cost of a hotel to spend on other stuff. Like the new BSG RPG... if it actually is released. We've only been hearing this for a year now.

Yeah, I think it'll need to be a significant upgrade for people to be willing to convert. Not something incremental like 3.5 or Star Wars: Saga Edition, but something really different -- e.g. fewer base classes, overhauled magic system, streamlined combat system (good bye Attacks of Opportunity!)

Am I the only one who liked AoO?

*looks guiltily at the epic sneak attack of opportunity feat he'll likely never get to use...*

*sigh*

I have to say I was a bit disappointed. While there were things about 4e that I have to admit I really liked, such as more core races, the fact there is a 4e coming at this point is kind of aggravating. There were also a few things I was iffy about. Some of what they mentioned made it seem more complicated than the current edition, and they didn't deny it. They just kind of danced around issues like that. The whole online integration is what has me the most po'd. Fans do just fine doing this on their own, but they expect us to pay for it. Granted having on line copies of print books you purchase is a nice, but having to pay extra for them as well as your subscription is crap.

Now that I'm back from GenCon, I need to take some time and get caught up on 4E; despite actually being at the con when the news came out I still know next to nothing about it (hell, I never even made it into the Wizards section of the Exhibit Hall).

I'm sure plenty of people like Attacks of Opportunity, but man, they have spawned more arguments in our game than anything else (Grapple has caused more confusion, but fewer arguments as people have to spend that time re-reading the rules for the 300th time).

I would not be sad to see them go.
