Fitness Playlist: Across the Spider-verse

About a year into the #BrokenAnkleSaga, I started running again. After slowly ramping up by running on carpet and the soft turf of our local college’s football field, I was ready to really run. The problem was … I wasn’t actually ready to run. My brain said I could just go out and run three miles like I did before that fateful snap, but in practice, I needed to work up to my old pace.

Thus, I returned to the Zombies, Run! 5K training app. Based on a Couch-to-5K approach, the app was exactly what I needed to get back running on a regular basis. Couch-to-5K advocates an interval-based approach to training – for example, run for a minute, walk for 30 seconds, then run for a minute again. Over time, the running intervals get longer, and the walking intervals get shorter until the go away entirely.

Running the indoor track at the College where I work, I decided I needed a new playlist.

Sony’s Spider-man: Enter the Spider-verse had just come out and I was devouring all things Spidey-related, including playing the Spider-man video game on PlayStation 4 (an awesome open-world game that sets a new standard for superhero video games) and reading the original sprawling Spider-verse comic book crossover via Marvel Unlimited.

As a result, I decided to assemble a Spidey-themed playlist, drawing heavily upon the Spider-man: Homecoming and Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse soundtracks. My intention is to augment it from other Spidey sources, like Spider-man: Far From Home, Sony’s various Spider-man movies, and the Spider-man video games. I haven’t gotten that far yet, mostly because I’m happy with the playlist as it exists today.

My Across the Spider-verse is a mix of instrumental and vocal songs that never fails to pump me up. That’s particularly true for songs like “What’s Up Danger”, “Way Up”, and “Home”, which a strategically positioned to give me an added boost on my runs.
