Ornament-a-Day 2019: Serenity

In 2006, Dark Horse Comics released Serenity ornament, the Firefly-class starship that was the namesake of the series with the same name. Unfortunately, they sold out before I could buy one. A few years later, my wife bought my a Reaver-disguised version of Serenity inspired by the vessel’s appearance in the Serenity movie, but it’s a grim ornament for a tree (which, of course, doesn’t prevent me from hanging it on the tree, it’s just usually placed in a more discreet location than your typical ornament).

Thankfully, Hallmark released their own version of Serenity in 2018, filling that particular Big Damn Heroic void on the tree.

The Hallmark version (and today’s Ornament-a-Day entry) faithfully recreates the television iteration of the ship, complete with battery-powered lights that illuminate its flight deck and signature “firefly” engine. The only downside to the ornament is those self-same batteries; if it was a string-powered ornament, it would one of the brightest ships on the tree. As is, the Serenity is great having on the Geek Tree, and it is big enough to be noticed, but I can’t help but wish it was more prominent.
