What surprised me about the New Mutants trailer

A new trailer for Fox’s The New Mutants dropped this week, giving us glimpses of all of its major characters and a little more insight into its horror-movie-in-an-asylum premise. What surprised me most about this trailer wasn’t the horror premise: I knew about that already, and it fits with the Demon Bear saga (one of the early New Mutants storylines, and a personal favorite).

No, what surprised me is how loyal they were to the New Mutants characters. We see almost all of the original New Mutants in the trailer: Dana Moonstar (Mirage), Roberto da Costa (Sunspot), Sam Guthrie (Cannonball), Ilyana Rasputin  (Magik), and Rahne Sinclair (Wolfsbane) and we see them with their original powers. Given Fox’s propensity to adding random (and unneeded) non-canon mutants to their X-Men movies, it was amazing to see the original line up presented in the trailer.

Repeatedly delayed for re-shoots and to accommodate the release of other movies,  I’m not overly hopeful about this film … but I have to say the line-up has me more than a little bit excited. These are some of the mutants I grew up with in high school, and I’ve been waiting a damn long time to see them on the big screen.
