Radio Active #92: Back from the Break

It took a year, but I’m back! On this episode of Nuketown Radio Active, the Broken Ankle Saga comes to an end as the Outdoor Geek ventures into the Pennsylvania wilderness for some winter-time camping.

Back in the warmer confines of the Game Room, I’ve got a ton of new role-playing games that I’m looking to play including Fiasco, Delta Green, Star Trek, and Tales from the Loop.

Nuketown News

The Broken Ankle Saga is over (or mostly so): On Dec. 30, 2017, I broke my bright ankle. After months of healing and physical therapy, the Broken Ankle Saga is over. I’m done with PT, I’m walking 4-5 miles a day, and I’m jogging again.

Outdoor Geek, Redux: I’m continuing to camp with my son’s Scout troop, including my coldest-ever camp out at the 2019 Klondike (a winter skills camp out involving troops from throughout our district). I got a new tent (which is awesome) and my first true “backpacking” backpack. Oh, and I’m going to be scoutmaster starting in March. And to think, I used to be a geek who didn’t like to go outside.

What I’m Playing Now

Civilization 6: Rise and Fall / Rising Storm: I got Civ 6 for Christmas and spent far, far too much time playing it. It’s a solid evolution of the Civilization franchise, with the latest expansion including a dark age / light age mechanic that gives you something to work for during each era. The game also breaks out technology and civics into their own trees which are researched concurrently and introduces new “districts” for your cities. Taken together, it makes for a richer, more complex game. It may be overwhelming for new players, but for old hands, it provides a series of new and refreshing challenges.

So Many Games, So Little Time: I picked up a bunch of role-playing games over the last year, but haven’t had time to play them. I’m hoping to change that at MEPACon Spring 2019.

  • Fall of Delta Green: Ken Hite’s take on the collapse of DELTA GREEN in the 1960s. DELTA GREEN is a blacker-than-black government agency (or is it?) tasked with fighting the influence of the Cthulhu Mythos and containing the conspiracies that are spawned by it. This self-contained game uses Robin Laws’ GUMSHOE system, rather than the traditional d100 basic system used by DELTA GREEN’s progenitor, Call of Cthulhu.
  • Fiasco: A game about bad people coming up with worse plans, which then fall apart. Imagine movies like HeatFargoThe Usual Suspects, etc. It’s a gamemaster-less, collaborative game that I think my group would enjoy.
  • Star Trek: There’s a new Star Trek game in print! The core rule book is a hefty and time consuming read, but it looks awesome.
  • Tales from the Loop: Kids on bikes investigating weird happenings in rural coastal Sweden.
