Ornament-a-Day: U.S.S. Reliant NCC-1864

For years, the ornament I wanted most for the Geek Tree was the U.S.S. Reliant (NCC-1864), the U.S.S. Enterprise’s opponent in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. While I had plenty of variant Enterprises from all of Star Trek’s eras and any number of opposing ships like the Klingon Bird of Prey and Romulan Warbird, Hallmark steadfastly avoided releasing Khan’s improvised flagship.

That changed in 2010 when the battery-powered Reliant went on sale. It’s a faithful reproduction of the starship, with its batteries beautifully lighting up its warp nacelles and saucer section. While I don’t typically pose my ornaments, I make an effort to pit the Reliant against the Enterprise whenever possible. In fact, one such pairing led to the best pictures of Geek Tree ornaments that I’ve ever taken.

In 2010, the Geek Tree invaded the family tree for the first and (so far) only time. The larger tree gave me the chance to spread out the Geek Tree’s ornaments and recreate the Enterprise and Reliant’s classic game of cat-and-mouse (though this time it was within the natural green needles of the Christmas tree, rather than the Mutara Nebula).
