NT Redesign 2011: Site Map, Content Inventory

With analytics in hand, I’ve conducted an inventory of Nuketown’s content. Below is a list (as of 7/13/2011) of the categories that comprise Nuketown, and their corresponding post counts.

It’s an interesting report. I expected that the “Games” section would have the most posts, but that honor goes to the “Blog” section with 907 posts. I expect this is a legacy of the early Aughts and my frequent rages against the Republicrat political machine, coupled with numerous Geek Dad updates as my fury gave way to wonder and exhaustion as my kids were born.

The “Games” section remains strong, with 637 posts, but I see some areas where things could be streamlined. There are only a handful of reviews about DS and Mac games; they’re not worth a category of their own (at least as things stand now). The “GenCon 2007” posts are clearly orphaned, and need to be moved to the “Events” section of the blog. I had no idea I’d posted so much about D&D 4th Edition, but given the heat of the Edition Wars, I suppose that shouldn’t be surprising.

I’m torn about the “Hoaxes” section; most of these posts are from the early to mid-2000s, and I rarely update that section, but the posts that are there are evergreen, and still useful to visitors. The “Netheads” section is an early attempt at including microcontent in the site (and a carry over from my old home-grown CMS, which had the short one-two punch posts as sidebar content).

There are two big things I’m noticing in looking over the site map:

News & Reviews: There’s no way to aggregate news and reviews across the web site; that content is silo’d under their respective media categories.

Columns: A good chunk of the content is given over to columns (“Off the Bookself”, “The Libertarian Gamer”, “Game Day”) but they aren’t clearly identified as such, and like “News” and “Reviews” there’s no side-wide aggregation available.
