Game Day: Autumn 2018 Shopping List

There’s a lot of cool role-playing game material coming out this autumn. I find myself flitting from product to product, excited at the prospect of picking a new game, then realizing that my budget can only support so many purchases.

Thus the shopping list. It’s largely aspirational — again, the budget can only support so much — but a geek can dream.

Waterdeep: Dragon Heist (Amazon): An urban adventure for character levels 1-5 set in the Forgotten Realms city of Waterdeep. I’m planning on running this for my resurrected Gamer Working Group lunchtime games.

Waterdeep: Dragon Heist on Roll20: Time is always at a premium with lunchtime gaming, so to help speed things up I’m planning to use Roll20’s Dragon Heist online module as a virtual tabletop.

Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage (Amazon): A companion product to Dragon Heist, the Dungeon of the Mad Wizard takes adventurers back to the legendary megadungeon of Undermountain. Given the usual pace of our lunchtime games, it’ll likely be a year before I’ll actually need this book … but I’d still like to get it. I suspect this one’s going on my birthday/Christmas wishlist.

New Dice: As they say, new campaign … new dice. Ok, maybe only I say that but I do like to get a new set of dice when kicking off a campaign. I haven’t settled on a color scheme yet; perhaps blue/purple or something with orange in it to complement the hardcover book.

Creature Codex: The Creature Codex promises hundreds of new monsters for D&D 5th Edition. It’s filling the void left by Wizards of the Coast’s decision to not publish additional monster manuals in favor of more focused tomes like Volo’s Guide to Monsters and Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes. As longtime readers know, I’m a sucker for a good monster book and this promises to be a very good monster book. The Tome of Beasts, Kobold’s earlier monster opus, has proven valuable to my ongoing Dungeons & Dragons campaign; I expect the same from the Creature Codex.

Star Trek Adventures RPG (Amazon): I’ve got a strange hankering to play Modiphius Entertainment’s new Star Trek role-playing game. I’ve heard generally good things about it and despite having played role-playing games for over three decades, I’ve never played a Star Trek RPG.
