Dicember 2017, Day 9: Dice & Punishment

Tales of a GM is running the 12 Days of Dicember, a project dedicated dice in all their randomized glory. The question for the ninth day of Dicember is “What are your dice punishments?”.

I can’t say I do much in the way of shaming of actual dice. If my dice aren’t rolling well, I’ll put them into time out and use a different set. Dice that consistently fail or fall of of favor because newer, better dice are placed in the Dice Cup of Shame or the Dice Mug of Shame.

The Dice Cup of Shame is an IronPigs plastic beer pitcher that I got as a giveaway at a baseball game. The Dice Mug of Shame is a ceramic Star Wars theme.

The true dice shaming is reserved for humans. If people forget their dice — and it happens — then they can take dice from the mug or cup. Note that the vessels themselves are not what confers the shame — I like both of them just fine — it’s the act of forgetting your dice that’s shameful and compels people to use dice of questionable luck.

We have had one die banishment in our group. Frustrated with my glow-in-the-dark d20’s propensity for rolling criticals, my friends threw the die into my gaming closet while I was away from the table. The die was lost for a year until I found it while moving the game room from the second floor to the third. I’ve been sure to maintain a watchful eye on it ever since.

  1. Hi Ken,

Did you “punish” your Players by reinstating the glow-in-the-dark d20?

The irony is that your Players imposed on you the exact same outcome I take upon myself as my GM dice superstition. No Player has been known to throw my dice away, so maybe my ritual of rotating out dice actually works. Maybe.

    Thanks again for participating
    Phil
