Dicember 2017, Day 4: Strangest Die

Tales of a GM is running the 12 Days of Dicember, a project dedicated dice in all their randomized glory. The question for the fourth day of Dicember is “Which is the strangest die in your collection?”

I don’t have any truly strange dice in my collection (e.g. a 27-sided die or one of those endlessly rolling d100s). The closest I get to that are my Roman numeral d12s. They’re numbered 1 to 4 and come in three shades of grey: light, medium, and dark. I picked them up at GenCon 2007 after seeing them put to great effect as NPC markers during a Battlestar Galactica game. They’re now part of my own convention toolkit.

The runner-up dice my twelve-sided d6s. I don’t remember where I picked them up — it might have been GenCon 2014 — but I got them specifically because they were quirky and different.

The strangest die in my gaming group is a twenty-sided d10 — it looks just like a normal d20, but instead of going from 1-20, it goes from 1-10 twice. This caused one hilarious night of confusion where the die’s owner accidentally got out that d10 and used it in place of his normal d20 for a good hour or two before he realized the true nature of his “cursed” die.

  1. Hi Ken,

An interesting selection of dice. I have one of the Roman d12s, but I cannot recall seeing the spotty d12s. They look very bizarre, so I naturally want to find a pair of those.

    Many thanks for sharing
    Phil
