The Rings of Earth

Posted in by Kenneth Newquist on Sun, 11/22/2009 - 5:30am

"What Earth Would Look Like with Saturn's Rings" is a YouTube video that gives Earth its own ring system. It provides views of the planet and rings from space ... but then takes it a step further and shows what the rings would look like from the planet's surface (a thin edge rising through the sky on the equator, a wide band near the poles). Very, very cool.

Cool indeed!

The shadow would create extended periods of darkness like an eclypse, would it not?

Cat Stevens might havewritten a song about it. I wonder about the impact that Earth rings would have on our culture? SciFi is not a dead or even dying genre, maybe hibernation.

I'm guessing yes, based on photos like this. How long they last, I have no idea -- anyone seen a time lapse of Saturn's ring shadows? :)

Woul the song be "I'm being followed by a ring shadow"? What would be the cultural impact of such rings? Would our species be any different? one thing for sure, ring worm would not have such a bad reputation, perhaps it would be a good omen

It would be cool if Earth had rings, would we be able to see them from the surface?
