... that this summers movies haven't really been thrilling me just yet. X3 was ... blah. Superman Returns was a fun nostalgia ride, but I'm having increasing trouble getting past our hero's on/off susceptibility to Kryptonite.

I'm counting on Pirates' natural exhuberance to power it past mediocrity, but there's not much else out this summer that's says "wow". An exception to that statement may be A Scanner Darkly, based on the Phillip K. Dick story. The movie was shot using rotoscoping (in which artists draw over live action footage, creating something that looks disconcertingly human) and from everything I've read, it promises to be loyal to Dick's work.

On the one hand, considering that Nicholas Cage is a big fan of Marvel comics and of Ghost Rider (in fact, his tatoo of Ghost Rider had to be digitally covered up for the movie), I would think that he'd bring his A-Game to the role, because he wants to do it justice.

On the other hand, Ben Affleck is a big Daredevil fan, and we know how that film turned out (though, in all fairness, he tried pretty hard, and the R-Rated Director's Cut was much better then the theatrical cut).

I have no strong feelings for or against Ghost Rider; I was never really that into the comic book, I don't go in with any expectations as to how they could screw it up. To be honest, it'll probably be a DVD rental for me ... Pirates, and possibly Clerks 2, will probably be the last movies I see in the theatre this summer.

I voted for Pirates, because it was my favorite movie of the choices... But I don't think it's really Speculative Fiction. Fantasy, perhaps, but not truly SpecFic.

Definitions vary I guess. I personally define speculative fiction as a catch-all for the genres of science fiction, fantasy and horror, and everything in between.
