The Tech Week From Hell

This just hasn't been my week for technology. Late last week the monitor on my work computer started making a horrible sound when I turned it on, and failed to display an image. After taking it down to computer repair, I learned that there was no easy fix. Given that the monitor was six years old, I talked with my boss and we decided to order a new one to replace it.

Now this was on my Windows desktop, and it so happens I had a lot of Windows-specific Web work to do. No big deal, I thought, I'll just use my Windows laptop. That worked for a few days, until the reurring problems I've been having with that laptop (which I thought were finally fixed) came roaring back. Now that machine won't boot either, forcing me to salvage a monitor from one of my other work machines for my Windows desktop.

Ok, so now I'm back up and running on my main Windows machine machine with an older, smaller monitor, but at least everything's working right? Then during lunch, my anti-virus program pops up and tells me that my machine's been infected with the Nachi.B worm (which was released by a well-meaning, if still idiotic coder to stop the spread of the MyDoom virus).

I don't know where the hell it came from -- I'm guessing it must have infected the machine via the network when I left it on overnight (not something I normally do, but I forgot to turn it off after my monitor mess). So now I'm disinfecting that particular machine and typing up this blog entry ... on my Mac.

But my headaches aren't limited to computers. Earlier this week, my Jeep Wrangler started making a noise that sounds ... well, weird. It almost sounds like there's a leak in an air hose somewhere, which in turn makes the engine sound like its revving higher than normal (it's not -- the RPM dial is the same as before.

I love technology, but weeks like this make me want to spend 48 hours doing nothing but drinking beer on my front porch.
