CNN.com: 32 planets discovered outside solar system

Posted in by Kenneth Newquist on Mon, 10/26/2009 - 4:30am

According to CNN, thirty-two new planets have been discovered outside of our solar system, bringing the grand total to 400. I've got to say that as a science fiction geek and space enthusiast, I love that we live in a world in which we've confirmed the existence of so many exoplanets. I can't wait until we reach the next stage: identifying terrestrial planets with Earth-like atmospheres.

"identifying terrestrial planets with Earth-like atmospheres."

IF those even exist ..... :)

You never know, HUMANS may be the race destined to terraform other worlds or artifically create whole systems to support terran-like atmospheres. WE may be destined to be the race that uplifts other life in the galaxy ..... :)

I have no doubt we could do it if we let ourselves. There are already arguments that we shouldn't terraform Mars because it should always be left in its pristine, barren state

Leaving aside the possibility that there might be life on Mars, I just can't buy that argument. There's something to be said for natural wonder ... there's also something to be said for making sure that Earth's biosphere isn't wiped out by one lucky potshot of the gods.

I too have heard the argument that we ought to leave Mars as a pristine rock. What could be as foolish. We terraformed much of the arable farmland in dry places on this planet, including So. CAL and AZ. And lots of people terraform the lawn.

And I think that's their argument: we screwed up/modified this planet, so we should leave all the other ones pristine. Not saying I buy that argument, just saying it's there.
