Savage Worlds Deluxe on sale at DriveThru RPG

by Ken Newquist / July 5, 2011

Savage Worlds Explorers EditionSavage Worlds Deluxe, a hardcover version of the Savage Worlds core rules, is available as a PDF through It's being pitched as a sort of special edition of the rules that expands upon, but doesn't invalidate, what came before. This version adds new setting-specific options, rules for social conflict, better and expanded examples, new artwork, and rules commentary from the creators.

I'm looking forward to the new book. I love the Explorers Edition's sleek digest format, which launched a Savage Worlds renaissance in my gaming group, but there are aspects of the rules (movement, rate of fire, vehicle chases) that I'd appreciate some elaboration on.

My only concern is how much of this content I already own from the Companions books. I hear that a not-insignificant-chunk of that content, like the species rules from the Fantasy Companion have been folded in. While it can be nice to have everything in one book, what I really want is new material to improve my game, rather than repackaged stuff that I already own (especially since some of the Companion material was already reprinted from the Fantasy Toolkit and the previous Savage Worlds hardcover.

Wouldn't Savage Worlds be a very good platform to run a campaign in the "Falling Sky" line of humans vs. a vastly technologically superior enemy.

It could work. I'd want to give the skitters a natural armor bonus of 2 or 3, and the mechs heavy armor (small arms fire simply doesn't affect them). Plus the mech's weapons should be able to do some ungodly damage to anyone unlucky enough to get caught in their laser-finders. :)

That said, I've been reading Diaspora (FATE + Hard SF) and I could easily see running it using those rules as well, with the skitters having the aspects "Armored Skin" and "You just need to get in close"...

My iPad is giving me a hungry sort of look. I wonder what it could be trying to say? :)

Hmmm. Now that you mention it, mine is looking pretty hungry too. :)

Deluxe rules? Nuke(m)con on the horizon? A hunger from our ipads? Plus I've been thinking about returning to the screen using a little Savage Worlds. Time to buy!
