Sick and Tired (Again)

Posted in by Kenneth Newquist on Thu, 07/08/2004 - 2:00am

I've got a cold again. It's the same cold I get every time I get sick, only this time its during the summer, which makes it all that much worse. It's one thing to be sick during the other seasons, when it can be rainy, snowing and generally dreary, and thus, you don't feel like you're missing anything. But during the summer, well, when it's sunny and 90 out, it makes you feel all the more miserable for not being able to go outside.

But what's really different this time around is Jordan. She's a toddler now -- 15 months and counting -- and she's doesn't get things like colds. When I came through the door on Tuesday, feeling utterly wasted and just wanting to collapse on the sofa, she was there, smiling at me, ready to play.

How do you explain to someone who can barely talk what the concept of "sick" is? How do you look into those hazel eyes and say "no, not now ... Daddy's too tired"? How do you explain that you don't want to play with her because you're afraid she'll get sick too?

The short answer is, you don't.

You just suck it up, and take care of the baby because being a dad doesn't stop when you get sick. Of course, that having been said, I was relieved when Sue was able to come right after work, at around 9, so we could tag team the baby-watching duties.
