Website for Godlike WWII Superhero Game Launches

Superheroes battle for supremacy on land, air and sea during the World War II as part of Hobgoblynn Games' new role-playing game Godlike.

Produced Dennis Detwiller (creator) and Greg Stolze (game designer), the game throws players into Allied and Axis frontlines as heroes with godlike superpowers. The game is being printed now, but those eager for a taste of the game can download the following from the Godlike web site:

  • Tutorial On The Game System

  • Godlike Quick-Play Rules

  • A Godlike Mission: Glazier

  • Characters For Glazier

The web site's features an overview of the game and plenty of other gamer goodness, including following (which is taken directly from the descriptions on their web site:

  • Power Packages: Sample power packages for High Realism, Cinematic, and Four-Color campaigns

  • Dice Rolling Programs: Two automated GODLIKE dice rollers are online, one Windows-based and one Web-based, featuring called shots, hard dice, and wiggle dice

  • New Characters:: Vouchsafe, The Puppeteer, and The Shade: full game stats for three Allied Talents

According to the site, the game uses a dice pool to "determine damage, hit location and initiative... unlike other games, Godlike dice pools do not look to overcome a target number; instead, matches are looked for. Both the number of matches, and how high those matching numbers are, are taken into account by the system."

Dennis Detwiller is best known for his work at Pagan Publishing on its Delta Green campaign books for Call of Cthulhu. Designer Greg Stolze designed the games Unknown Armies and Usagi Yojimbo.

I checked out some previews of the this game at GenCon 2001, and the artwork was jaw-droppingly good. The feel of the promo materials matches that of the World War II era, from the propaganda posters for the Nazis to the speeches by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Half of the guys in my gaming group were history majors or minors, and they couldn't wait to get their hands on this game when we first heard about it a few months ago. Detwiller's work on Delta Green was first rate, and I'm expecting nothing less from Godlike. Check out the web site at http://www.hobgoblynn.com/godlike/.
