Yeah, I think skill challenges will always be a matter of art as much as science, for the reasons you identify. But I'm ok with that; if my players are being creative about coming up with a solution to a problem (and thus, earning that +2 bonus from aid another) then I'm ok with auto or near-auto) successes. That's better, IMHO, then simply saying "I aid another ..." and then roll a die.
