Ogre's Choice Awards 2006

Ogre Cave offers their opinions on the best products of 2006. Among the winners are True20 (best role-playing game), Player's Handbook 2 (best RPG supplement) and Caylus (best board game).

The list has a few surprises, mostly in the form of games I hadn't heard of before despite being popular enough to win categories. The castle-building board game Caylus was a new one one me, as was the runnerup RPG Artesia (and the comic book it's based on) and the card game winner Perplex City.

You can find out the logic behind the votes by listening to the corresponding podcast by the gamers (and gameshop owners) who make up the Ogre Cave editorial board. The best bit was probably the discussion of the State of the Industry Award, which went to WizKids Battlestar Galactica CCG and Caylus. In their opinions the games represented the dominent trend in gaming this year, which was an inability to correctly judge demand with Battlestar Galactica falling flat despite being a pretty good game, and Caylus far outstripping U.S. publisher Rio Grande's ability to supply it.
