Message to 9/11 Hoaxers: The Truth Matters

Posted in by Kenneth Newquist on Thu, 01/24/2002 - 2:00am

I'm disgusted. Pissed off. Angry. Why? Because of an e-mail I received this week alleging that while American car companies have donated millions of dollars in money and equipment to disaster relief to the vicitims of the 9/11 atrocities, foreign companies have failed to back up their sympathetic words with donations. It's simply not true.

Hoax E-mail Alleges Foreign Car Companies Ignored 9/11

Posted in by Kenneth Newquist on Wed, 01/23/2002 - 2:00am

An e-mail hoax spawned by the aftermath of the horrible events of September 11th alleges that while American companies have given millions of dollars in response to the atrocity, foreign automobile companies have given nothing.

It's an outright lie. Contrary to the e-mail's claims that only Volkswagen and Hyundai have given money, many (if not all) of the overseas car companies listed here have given millions to the cause.

Revenge of E-mail Surcharge Bill 602P

Posted in by Kenneth Newquist on Tue, 01/15/2002 - 2:00am

The Evil Empire that is the U.S. Postal Service is preparing to unleash a nefarious plan called "Bill 602P" that will charge Americans for every e-mail sent, raising billions and delivering a crippling blow against its archenemy, the snail-mail slaying Internet. Or so says an hoax from at least 1999 that absolutely refuses to die.

Internet-loving, e-mail sending netizens everwhere will be relieved to know that this e-mail (in all of its many iterations) is just as bogus as it was on the day it first appeared as a nefarious plan allegedly hatched by the Canadian post office.

Here are the hoaxes; scroll down for the debunking.

On Gas Spikes and the Free Market

Posted in by Kenneth Newquist on Mon, 01/14/2002 - 2:00am

During the week of 9/11/2001 I wrote an editorial about the gas spikes taking place in a few towns in the Mid-West. Panicked individuals, shaken by the attacks, were swarming the gas stations for fuel. Gas station owners responded by raising the prices. My point was that this action -- usually called profiteering -- was not immoral, and indeed, was an example of what was, is and hopefully will always be right with America.

A controversial idea, at least in this day and age. I expected some sort of response and I got one, from Mr. Daniel Bishop. (Read the letter). As for my thoughts on his letter...

Risk 2210 reimagines a classic board game

Posted in by Kenneth Newquist on Sat, 01/12/2002 - 2:00am

Risk 2210 Cover Every once in a while, our regular Friday night RPG session falls apart. It might be because of sick kids, weddings, extended business trips or just bad luck, but only a handful of our players can make it. If it's a night when the party really needed the resources of the missing players, we ditch the RPG game in favor of one of the board games in my closet. And our favorite one to date is Risk 2210.

Avalon Hill's Risk 2210 is the successor to the classic board game Risk, greatly expanded for a far future age. In this version of Risk, up to four countries have been nuked off the globe, and dozens of new ones have formed in the wake of 21st century conflicts. Armies can once again wage war for control of continents, but they can also seize sea and moon colonies.

Organizing Your Campaign Online, Part II: Alternatives

Posted in by Kenneth Newquist on Tue, 01/01/2002 - 2:00am

Organizing your campaign online is easy, especially using Yahoo! Groups, a free online discussion board offered as part of the Yahoo! search engine. But for those who don't want to use Groups -- perhaps because of Yahoo's notorious terms-of-use contracts (Yahoo's terms of use includes language that leads some to believe that the company is trying to claim ownership of all content hosted on its site) there are other options.

The key feature to think about when looking for an online tool is the ability for everyone in your group to post and receive messages. Everything else -- be it polls, databases, file storage or photo albums --- is just gravy.

Sulfnbk.exe is not a virus

Posted in by Kenneth Newquist on Tue, 01/01/2002 - 2:00am

An e-mail urging folks to search for an alleged virus-infected filed called "sulfnbk.exe" on their Windows computer is a hoax. This harmless file exists on most Windows machines, and is not evidence of a virus infection. Deleting it won't destroy your computer, but it will make you feel very silly when someone tells you the real deal.

Harry Potter Weaves a Perfect Spell

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is a creative, heroic and inspiring movie that faithfully reproduces the book of the same name on the big screen.
